News. Commendation Letter from UNC's Office of the President for Centers & Institutes Work. InfoMatters praised for their system that enables a primary means to address the diverse mission of the 16-campus UNC system is through centers and institutes (hereafter, "centers"). Such units, currently 180 in number, strengthen and enrich multidisciplinary programs of research, instruction, and public service conducted by UNC faculty. They also have a strong positive impact on the economic development of the state by providing job opportunities, supplying technical assistance and training, fostering community development and outreach programs, and enhancing the transfer of new technologies. In FY 1999-2000 alone, UNC centers received $450 million in funding, employed 5,519 personnel, and produced 6,885 publications. (by John W. Hardin, Ph.D.)
